I am amazed how these two beautiful little handmade clay pipes have survived perfectly intact. I think they are unused as the bowls are clean and unstained. They both have the same maker's name stamped into the clay, difficult to make out but reads: “W Southorn and Co Broseley” who were prolific and important pipe manufacturers based near Ironbridge in Shropshire, England.
One is relatively plain in design with ribbing where the bowl meets the stem, the other has wonderful raised Pineapple like dimples to the lower half of the bowl which diminish toward the stem. Nicely supported by a short clay heal.
Neither pipe has any breaks, repairs or gluing. They are both in superb original condition, oddly both have a small area of flaking on the stem which looks like it was caused by an impurity embedded in the clay during manufacture, this of course adds to their story.
They measure roughly the same, around 5 ½ long x 1 ½ inches tall. Or 130 x 40mm.
UK shipping is included in the price. Collection from Derby available.
