Beautifully handmade and stamped "Sander’s patent orchid pans regno 290486". This Terracotta Orchid pan was made around 1900s and designed specifically for Orchid cultivation, with a wide-open rim and air holes for the root system to breath and absorb moisture. It also has small holes in the rim to affix wires and suspend the pot, The Sanders Orchid pan patent design was unique as it included a projection in the base to mimic the orchids natural growing position. In fantastic condition for a pot over 100 years old. No cracks or hairlines it still rings when tapped, I believe it to be unused as it came into my possession a number of years ago from a nursery clearance. It has been proudly displayed in my potting shed ever since.
The name Sanders remains synonymous in the Orchid world to this day, many of the varieties and hybrids available today are due to the efforts of the Sanders family and their early Orchid discoveries.
