A nice Coopers Barrel Branding iron. In as good a condition now as it was when it was made. These were and still are used to brand ownership marks onto wooden Ale or Whiskey casks. Blacksmith made out of forged steel, probably made in two parts and then skillfully joined on the anvil. Despite its utilitarian purpose, it has real character and was clearly made with care.

 

The head bears the letters "W N" It also has the letter "T" struck into it I presume to indicate the correct orientation of the initials to be branded.

 

It has been lightly cleaned and waxed in order to bring out a nice even patina. 

 

No manufacturer markings sadly, but probably dating from 1890s.

 

Simply a great piece of industrial history that would look good displayed in any creative setting.

 

Measuring around 16 inches in length x 1 1/4 inches or r: 42cm x 35cm.
